The For Your Car guide

What paperwork do you need to sell a car?

To sell a car, you generally need its certificate of title and the information needed to transfer ownership. A bill of sale, an odometer disclosure, lien-release paperwork, or other documents may also be needed. Check your state’s DMV/DOL for the requirements that apply to your car.

Certificate of title
The document that identifies a vehicle’s recorded owner and may show a lender’s lien.

Start with the certificate of title

The certificate of title is the ownership document for a vehicle. Check the owner names and whether a lien is recorded. If the title is missing or the car has a loan, tell the buyer before arranging the sale.

Check what your situation requires

Required signatures and supporting documents vary. Use your state’s DMV/DOL instructions to confirm what to sign, what to provide, and how to report the sale. Ask your lender about any outstanding loan or lien.

Bring the details to the call

When you request an offer, tell us what paperwork you have and describe the car’s condition. We talk through those details on the call and confirm the offer if the car qualifies. Confirm pickup and payment before the handover.
